What do you do when you feel anxious?
Our intentional practices in the minutes after anxiety arises are crucial to our health and our success.
When I recognize anxiety rising up in me,
I stop.
I close my eyes.
I breathe deeply for a few seconds.
I tell myself I will be alright no matter what happens.
Then I ask myself,
“What is one small thing I can do to make this situation better for myself and those around me?”
Typically, just by going through this short routine, I find myself less anxious or worried, even if I don’t yet have a good answer to the question. Just this exercise helps me see that it’s not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of my whole life, which ironically helps me make better choices and take smart, considerate action toward a workable solution.
What is one of your typical responses to anxiety, helpful or not?
