Did you know that a recent study found that positive self talk can improve our performance? Unfortunately, all too often, our heads are filled with degrading and aggressive negative thoughts, instead of positive self talk.

There can be a lot of reasons for this, but one of the most common ones are the inner narratives we tell ourselves.

But what are inner narratives? And how can they impact our ability to succeed in life?

If you want to learn the answer to these questions, you’re in the right place. In this brief guide, we discuss the role inner narratives have on our self talk and success. Let’s get started!

What Is An Inner Narrative?

You can think of your inner narrative as the ongoing story we tell ourselves in our minds. It’s the internal dialogue of your experience. It’s the thoughts that pop into our brain that ultimately create the core beliefs that we hold dear.

Many people confuse their inner narrative with their life’s story. Our story is the objective chapters of our life; the things that happen to us and how we respond to them.

We can’t change these chapters. But, we can change how our inner brains interpret these events and the value we place on ourselves in light of them. Positive self talk starts with recognizing the comments that pass through your mind in regards to the events of our life’s story, and how we view ourselves because of them.

How Can This Narrative Negatively Influence Our Self Talk?

When the inner narratives we tell ourselves don’t match our real-life circumstances, it begins to affect our self talk. Let’s go over some negative self talk examples.

Maybe your inner narrative says you are an artist. But, whenever you make art, no one seems to care about it. So, your self talk turns negative.

You tell yourself to quit art because no one will ever pay attention to it. Or, let’s say your parents always wanted you to have a certain career path. When you take a different turn, your inner voice tells you that you failed your parents and let them down.

Further down the road, eventually you have practiced this kind of self talk so many times that it becomes second nature to you. If you even open a thing of paint, your inner voice is already saying things like “Why bother? It’s not going to be any good. No one’s going to care about this. You’re just wasting time and money.”

This is a classic example of how our inner narratives can impede our ability to succeed in both careers and life in general. But, it doesn’t need to be this way.

How Life Coaching Can Help You Overcome Negative Self Talk

Self talk and inner narratives do happen naturally. We can’t always control what thoughts run through our minds. However, self talk becomes something you practice, and as my high school coach always said,

“You play how you practice.”

This is where a good coach comes in. A coach can teach you how to practice positive self talk in a way that becomes second nature to you so you can be more content, more confident, and more courageous to live the life you really want.

There’s a reason why there are roughly 17,500 life coaches in the United States. A good life coach should be highly gifted in helping people break out of negative self talk cycles that our inner narratives can lead us down.
